Gareth Southgate’s time as England manager is now over following England's final at Euro 2024 against Spain, and everyone will be keen to know who will replace the Englishman in one of the biggest jobs in football. 

With such a fantastic squad and incredible depth of talent in attacking areas, England won’t be short of people lining up to replace Southgate, who has been in charge of the national team since 2016. 

Many will dismiss Southgate’s achievements for being unable to land a major trophy with his squad so far, but it must be remembered that he was appointed off the back four consecutive disastrous campaigns, including when England were unable to qualify for Euro 2008.

What followed this was bowing out at the quarter final stage of the 2022 World Cup, and another final at Euro 2024, again falling at the last hurdle to Spain.

But it does seem like the right time for change, which even Southgate agrees with. There is potential to make a big tactical shift with some big names in the running, and it could finally see the Three Lions win a World Cup, which all England fans will be dreaming of.

England Next Manager Odds: Who is Favourite With Carsley Announced as Interim Manager?

There are many names that could well be considered by the FA in the England next manager odds, and it might even be somebody who isn’t listed below. Especially with Lee Carsley now being appointed interim manager, it means there could be someone else available at the time he is replaced, if they decide not to go with him. 

As we say, there will be many managers in world football who may even be persuaded away from their current job to take charge of England and hopefully finally deliver them their first World Cup since 1966. The clear outright favourite to be next England manager as it stands is Graham Potter, and he is one of only a few Englishman at the top of the betting market.

Eddie Howe

Someone who many England fans would love to see take the job would be Eddie Howe, who is currently in charge at Newcastle. The reason being he has transformed Newcastle, albeit with some help thanks to boosted funds in the transfer market, from a relegation candidate to top four last season and seventh the following season.

That's without mentioning his phenomenal work at Bournemouth, taking them from League One all the way to the Premier League and helping them become an established team in the division.

Most people would be delighted if Howe were to become the next England manager because he seemingly has the perfect blend of man management and tactical prowess, something which England have arguably been lacking for a long time.

Mauricio Pochettino

With a few games to go at the end of the 2023/24 season, many would have imagined that Mauricio Pochettino would be in the Chelsea job for the long haul and it wouldn't be a possibility he would take over as England boss. But, just a few months down the line and it's realistic that could be the case after he left Chelsea by mutual consent following the end of the season.

Pochettino, on paper, would be an amazing fit with England's young group of players, and the fact that he helped develop Harry Kane into one of the best strikers in world football in his time at Tottenham would certainly be a convincing factor when it comes to the FA making a decision on the next England manager.

Pep Guardiola

There's probably a very small, outside chance he would take on the role, but I doubt there's be a single person in England who wouldn't love Guardiola to take on the role as next England manager.

His record speaks for itself at club level and the outstanding football he has managed to get Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and now Man City to play is undeniable. On top of that, he has developed an English core at Man City which would mean he would be managing a fair few players now and in the future that he has already with his current team.

Jose Mourinho

Many might say he is past it and wouldn't be a good fit, but Jose Mourinho was once upon a time the exact manager all England fans were demanding be offered the job. Times have certainly changed, and the former Chelsea man is well down the list currently in the next England manager odds, but he certainly knows how to win, something England haven't experienced much of for a long time.

Lee Carsley

Definitely not the most glamorous name on the list, but if the FA were thinking about following in the footsteps of Gareth Southgate's path then Lee Carsley could well be appointed. Carsley is now set to be named interim manager, which could end up becoming a permanent role just like what happened with Southgate when he was successful as interim manager following the sacking of Sam Allardyce.

Southgate Leaves England After Euro 2024

Originally, it looked certain that, win or lose, Southgate would be ending his tenure as England managing following Euro 2024. But, the decision was left in the manager's hands, with the FA keen for Southgate to continue as England boss and be the man to take them over the line to their first trophy since 1966.

During Euro 2024, the former England boss was not shy in making clear the way he has been made to feel by the fans during this tournament with many of them suggesting he is not the man to take England forward.

"We all want to be loved, right? When you're doing something for your country and you're a proud Englishman, when you don't feel that back and when all you read is criticism, it's hard," Southgate said following England's semi final win over the Netherlands.

The criticism from fans clearly took its toll because Southgate opted to step down as England manager following Euro 2024, and has opened up the candidacy to whoever the FA believe is the best fit for the role.

But, he remained upbeat and opted to look at the positives from his time as England manager, saying: "As a proud Englishman, it has been the honour of my life to play for England and to manage England. It has meant everything to me, and I have given it my all. But it's time for change, and for a new chapter."
